August in Review

August Reads

Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani: I've sort of become obsessed with graphic novels, especially when they're as creative as "Pashmina". This is a beautiful example of an important story creatively told.

The Ghosts of Greenglass House by Kate Milford: I'm just so in love with this series. The story is a perfect mixture of mystery and fantasy. Can't wait to read the next!

Nice Work if you can Get It by Celia Imrie: I'm a big fan of British books and travel books. This is a mixture of both. A British book based in Nice France, while also including a bit of a mystery. It's super cute and the perfect beachy read!

Flora and Ulysses - The Illuminated Adventures by Kate DiCamillo: This story of a girl and her superhero squirrel is just the cutest. If catchphrases are a sign of how much someone enjoys a book, my incessant use of the phrase "Holy Bagumba" should tell you just how much I loved it.

The Little Cornish Kitchen by Jane Linfoot: Because of my love for all things Jenny Colgan, I wanted this book to be just like one of her perfectly sweet novels. It was not. It's not well-written at all, and it takes a bit too long to get to the point. But the story itself reminds me of the fun I had in Cornwall last summer, so at least there's that!

August Travels

August was a bit of a blur from the start. In the very first week, I spent 4 days over the course of the week in New York City. We saw 4 shows, and wandered all around the Village. Both trips were probably my most favorites I've had in a while. Sometimes it's best not to have any real plans. It's so fun to see what you can happen upon when you wander through the big apple.

After that, it was a quick trip for work to San Antonio, Texas. I've been there before to work, and I realize loads of people love it there. I however am not one of those people. If I'm headed to Texas, I desperately want it to be Austin. Not to mention, even though I like heat (as opposed to freezing cold) in general, Texas heat is unbelievably exhausting. Just wandering the Riverwalk took everything I had out of me. I used to think I could totally live in Austin, but after this trip I learned I'm definitely an East Coast girl. I can deal with the heat - just in small increments.

August Eats

During one of the trips to New York City, we did a Secret Food Tour of the Village (just like we did in London.) And just like in London, the tour was fantastic! I enjoyed everything I ate and our tour guide Bridgette was fabulous. In her previous life, she was a history teacher so we bonded over our teachery personalities, and her knowledge of the village was fantastic. She taught me loads about the city, and the delicious food found in Greenwich Village.

August Shows

It was a very, very good month for shows. It started with the delightful Hello, Dolly at Sacred Heart of Glyndon. After that I headed to New York, where we saw Pretty Woman, Spongebob Squarepants, The Play That Goes Wrong and Waitress (for the third time.) All of which were wonderful, though some were better than others.

We headed to Arena Stage in DC, for the first time and saw Dave, which I absolutely fell in love with. It was a fantastic comedy, led by a first rate cast. I'm hoping against hope that this beauty will make its way to Broadway very soon!

Lastly, we caught Jeff Daniels in concert at Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis. I'm a huge fan of his acting, and after seeing him in concert a few years ago, I became a big fan of his music as well. His storytelling is delightful, and it's super fun to see him jam with his family and friends. Seeing him in concert, only makes me more excited to see him in To Kill a Mockingbird this winter on Broadway!

August Moves

After a few months with MD Theatre Guide, I made the decision to move back to Broadway World. I've been trying to decide between the two for the last few weeks, and in the end, I decided to make the change. I'm thinking it will be good for me, but only time will tell. The fall should also bring a few more changes, (hopefully!) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the best!
