My Favorite Place in San Antonio

San Antonio Texas is somewhere I've been for work. It's not a city I'm a fan of. If I'm going to Texas, I'm heading to Austin. While San Antonio has parks, and the River Walk and great places to shop, it's just not my ideal place to travel. However, there is one restaurant in the city, that I'd transport here to Maryland in a heartbeat if I could.

There are not many destinations I'd brave a 2 mile walk in 100 degree heat for. It's quite possible that Guenther House is the only one. The Guenther House is an old powder mill on the banks of the San Antonio River. During my last trip to the city - a trip that only lasted 3 days - we enjoyed breakfast there twice.

Unfortunately, this trip only included one visit, yet that visit was all together as delicious as I had remembered it. Their menu includes staples such as eggs, bacon and waffles. Though, because they are a powder mill, their waffles, pancakes and homemade biscuits are their specialties. And oh boy, are they special!

You can choose to dine inside, which looks like you're visiting someone's home in the 1950s, which is lovely. But their patio is so beautiful and has such a pretty view of the river, that I braved the weather and chose to dine al fresco instead of opting for air conditioning.

That's how I found myself chowing down on a 3 inch high biscuit, 2 eggs, sausage gravy, potatoes and bacon in 103 degrees on an outdoor patio on my last morning in Texas. I may have felt like my face was going to melt off, but I was secretly doing my foodie happy dance inside my head.

If ever oh ever, you're in San Antonio I'd highly recommend this gem. I've only been for breakfast, but if the food I've eaten there is any indication, I'm sure lunch and dinner are positively delicious as well.

P.S. - Though I didn't have room for one after my monstrous meal, if I were you, I'd splurge for a cinnamon bun which is also a specialty and is also the size of your head. Yum!
