State of Online Dating: Epic Fail

Image
About 6 months ago, my boss jokingly told me that she had added my joining eHarmony to her calendar. And if I didn't meet that goal, she was not going to be happy. So after attempting to write a profile - with input from every person in my life, I hit the button and joined the site for a whole year. Now after being a member for 6 months, I'm giving you an update on how it's all going. Long story, short - it's not. I've decided it's so not my thing. I don't know what it is, but there are no Prince Charmings on that site that like me, whom I also like. For starters, I've been matched with men way out of my radius. For some reason, the site thinks I want to drive super far to meet my prince for dinner or drinks. Honestly, at one point I had matches in Connecticut, and New York. Now, it's just mostly Virginia and DC. On top of not listening to my radius preferences, they seem to not listen to my thoughts on what I'm looking for in a mate. Sup...

The View from Friday

Big Cork Vineyards Summer Bash Reading: I just finished "Towers Falling" which, while not perfect is a great way to open a dialogue with kids about September 11. I'm about to start "Less" which is supposed to be hilarious. I definitely need the humor after reading such a serious book. Judging: My Ravens who beat the Bills 41 - 3 last weekend, pretty much flopped in primetime last night. What the heck? They usually don't look that tired until well past the second game of the season. Planning: There are so many BIG plans in the works, that my little brain is working in overdrive. I'm excited to see where they go! Getting Over: I suppose you can say that I'm pretty much OVER today. Work was not my favorite. So many things blew up that it felt like I worked in bomb disposal instead of instructional design. Can I just hit the lottery already and travel the world for a living? Listening to: I'm currently still living my best life as a S...

An Overabundance of Books

Image
So embarrassing... This is a photo of my current stash of books I've yet to read - all of the books that are horizontal (and some vertical) are all completely unread. The stack has grown increasingly embarrassing over the last few months. Between attending book festivals, used book stores and new book stores, I haven't been able to help myself and have purchased a ridiculous number of books. What is wrong with me? Intellectually I know that the library exists. I also know that if I want to purchase books, many, many used book stores exist. Yet still, I enter knowingly into Barnes and Noble and exit with 3 books in my hand. What's even worse, is that in the midst of mulling over this post yesterday, I walked into a book store and walked out with 3 additional books to add to the list. In my defense that was a local used bookstore so the financial impact wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been for my wallet. But still...That's an additional 3 books added to ...

30 Days, 30 Posts

In an effort to be just a wee bit more creative, and write more regularly, I've decided to embark on a 30 day writing journey this September. For the next 30 days the plan is to write one post a day. I have so much I've been saving up to write about that it's getting overwhelming. So by writing each day, I hope to get all those posts out of my head and down on to paper, so to speak. Even though, there's quite a lot to write about, I wouldn't say there's exactly 30 days' worth of fun stuff. Therefore, I must issue a warning. Not all posts will be knock your socks off fantastic. Because of the needing to write each day, I guarantee that at least one post will be all about how terriffic/terrible the weather is being at that very moment. Sorry if weather commentary isn't your thing! While I have a lovely life, there's no living on the edge here. I like to do super fun things, but I also like to sit on my sofa, drink tea and read books.  So if y...

La Vie Boheme at 35/18

Stage door at RENT in 2002 - with Sebastian Arcelus (Roger) About 16 years ago, I discovered the music of Jonathan Larson. It wasn't my choice. I have a friend who adores  RENT . She had seen it multiple times already, and she was turning 21, so it only seemed right that her best friends take her to New York to see it on Broadway. I didn't want to go. RENT was to be nothing like Jesus Christ Superstar or Phantom of the Opera - the shows I adored. But I went anyway. "Forget regret, or life is yours to miss..." I sit in the theatre staring at the rough and messy set thinking that this is no where near as beautiful as a Paris Opera House. The orchestra starts, and I relax a bit. Two songs in, Angel - a cross dresser in a bright red Santa-themed dress - starts singing about how she played her drum and drove a dog crazy enough that he jumped off the roof. This is going exactly as I had assumed it would. I am told to "just go with it." So I do. A few so...
